Membership in API is open to corporations involved in the oil and natural gas industry or an allied industry.
The API Bylaws establish the requirements for membership. They are:
- Oil and natural gas companies incorporated in and having their principal offices in the United States, Canada or Mexico are eligible for membership in API.
- Companies involved in an allied industry and incorporated in and having their principal offices in the United States, Canada or Mexico are eligible for membership in API.
- Companies involved in an allied industry with principal offices in a country other than the United States, Canada or Mexico may be admitted to API membership on approval by the chairman, president and treasurer.
