API’s members are committed to protecting the environment, and the health and safety of all who share it. API’s safety and health activities support this commitment through research, standards development, training, information transfer and advocacy. The oil and natural gas industry is becoming an increasingly safer place to work, despite a job environment that often involves heavy equipment, hazardous materials, high temperatures and high pressure equipment. This is reflected by a declining rate of illnesses and injuries – a rate much lower than that for the private sector as a whole.
This commitment to safety and health goes beyond company boundaries and extends into the communities where our members operate, as well as the products our members sell. API leads many industry activities to evaluate the potential risks of our products throughout the product’s life-cycle. Used properly, our industry’s products provide many benefits to society.
Workplace Safety for the U.S. Petroleum Industry
This report compares the rates of job-related injuries and illnesses in different segments of the U.S. petroleum industry with those in the U.S. private sector. The report is based on information from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BS) publication, Occupational Injuries and Illnesses: Counts, Rates, and Characteristics. This is a free report. Measuring Process Safety Performance
To promote improved process safety performance, API implemented a revised process safety measurement system for reporting process safety incidents beginning on January 1, 2008. The API Guide to Report Process Safety Incidents provides guidance to global refining and petrochemical companies on the collection and reporting of "lagging" process safety performance incidents that are designed to set performance targets, drive continuous improvement, and enable benchmarking. Having a consistent set of lagging indicators will also provide assurance to operating companies that process safety systems designed to control risks operate as intended. Reporting this data to API will enable API to track and report overall industry process safety performance.

REACH - A Guide for API Members
The new European Union (EU) Registration, Evaluation, Authorization (and Restriction) of Chemicals (REACH) regulation came into force on June 1, 2007. The regulation sets out new requirements for chemicals and substances manufactured within or imported into the EU. The API REACH Guidance attached below discusses (1) the general requirements of REACH, (2) the business impact of REACH on industry and (3) oil and gas trade association activities to prepare for REACH. The Guidance also includes links to REACH compliance information.

2008 Industrial Hygiene Workshop - June 3, 2008
The API Industrial Hygiene (IH) Task Force is hosting its annual workshop specifically for petroleum/natural gas industrial hygienists attending the national American Industrial Hygiene Conference in Minneapolis on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Minneapolis Hilton. Presentations will address topics such as IH support during new project development and ergonomics in quality control and research laboratories. No need to register in advance; check the AIHce schedule for room assignment.
