EPA's Environmental Performance Track Member

In January 2002, MAP’s Garyville refinery was awarded membership in EPA’s National Environmental Performance Track. The Garyville Refinery was the first, and to date only, refinery in the United States, to be so honored. The Performance Track recognizes facilities that have an Environmental Management System, have demonstrated environmental achievements and commitment to continued improvement, have means of public outreach and performance reporting, and have a record of sustained compliance with environmental requirements.

In 2001, eight external floating roof storage tanks at Marathon Ashland Pipe Line Martinsville, Illinois Station were successfully covered with geodomes. The purpose of the geodomes is to reduce the amount of water entering the tanks as well as to significantly reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. One year after installation, the geodomes have reduced VOC emissions at the Martinsville Station by almost 62%.
