Promoting Practical Steps to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Working with the Pembina Institute for Appropriate Development, an independent public interest and advocacy organization and non-profit consulting group, Petro-Canada is a founding sponsor of a new Internet project, launched at the Globe 2000 environment conference. This Web site provides quality, one-stop shopping for practical steps that Canadians in all sectors can take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is an important partnership between corporations, the Pembina Institute, Environment Canada and Natural Resources Canada to help fund the development of the Climate Protection Solutions project.

Also, In partnership with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and the City of Mississauga, Ontario, Petro-Canada participated in a pilot project to promote the maintenance of correct tire pressure as a way to improve fuel economy and therefore reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To increase community awareness, tire inflation stickers were posted on gasoline pumps, and at some sites, tire inflation “ambassadors” provided guidance and assistance to customers to encourage them to check their tire pressure. NRCan is studying the results to determine if the pilot project can be used to formulate a national strategy.

Petro-Canada is one of the founding sponsors, in collaboration with the David Suzuki Foundation, of the Climate Change Calculator, a creative software application developed by the Institute. Using this interactive software, publicly available on the Internet, Canadians can calculate their own personal greenhouse gas emissions, compare their own emissions with provincial and national averages, and learn how personal choices can make a difference.
